Dyslexia

Dyslexia is not reading backwards

People think dyslexia is blurring words, letters moving , spelling backwards…These are visual perception issues and yes,  some people with dyslexia experience blurring or moving words.. But dyslexia is more than this…

Dyslexia – what is it?

Picture
Dyslexia is simply a difference in thinking style. Dyslexics usually have a highly developed visual ability. Dyslexics have the ability to perceive things three dimensionally, this works wonderfully for some things, but is a problem with the written word. Dyslexics usually have a low threshold for confusion and tend to lose focus easily. The Davis methods, work on how to focus, reduce anxiety and solve the source of the confusions.

Some of the most common difficulties include

  • Reading difficulties or avoidance
  • Losing focus easily
  • Difficulty with reading comprehension
  • Poor or inconsistent spelling
  • Writing difficulties
  • Confusion, despite intelligence
Sometimes it can include
  • Low self esteem
  • Poor social skills
  • Frustration

Difficulty in the education system

Picture
•   The education system is designed primarily for word thinkers
•   Visual learners are neglected in most schools
•   Schools use phonics – the weakest area for dyslexics
•   Dyslexics are ‘meaning’ oriented – if they don’t understand they lose focus
•
It is impossible to read for meaning when “sounding out” words

The Davis Dyslexia Correction program uses:

  • Visual methods for correcting symptoms of dyslexia
  • The dyslexic person reads more accurately, easily and confidently
  • Comprehension improves dramatically
  • Focusing is much easier
  • Reading is not a chore
  • Spelling ability improves using simple exercises
  • Writing issues can be over-come

How will Davis Dyslexia Correction Programs help?

Picture
Davis Dyslexia correction programs help the dyslexic individual to gain some tools to help:
  • relax
  • refocus
  • manage energy
  • Treat the causes
The confusions that are causing the difficulty are addressed, letters, punctuation words.
The dyslexic individual will leave the program with a new confidence in reading and understanding, in writing and in speaking and listening. The individual’s goals are addressed specifically.
A support person of their choice, such as a parent, friend or other family member can be trained during the program to continue to support the individual on an ongoing basis. This is supported by the Davis Dyslexia Facilitator.

Words that have no meaning

Dyslexics like to read for meaning, otherwise what is the point of reading. The method that makes sense to dyslexics is to think about the meaning, this usually means visualising or imagining what is being read. It is easy to visualise an elephant, dinosaur or car. However, if you are thinking visually and for meaning, there are many words that are used that have no picture/meaning associated with them, words such as “the”, “what”, “it” or “AND”. Actually there are 217 of these trigger words. The Davis Dyslexia correction program explores the meaning of these words and the person makes a clay model for the meaning, to ensure full understanding, and to eliminate further confusion. The future use of this word does not cause the person to disorientate, as there is a subliminal meaning for the word.

Why do some dyslexics see words strangely?

Dyslexics have the ability to perceive things three dimensionally, it is why they are so good at certain things, such as art, engineering etc. Picture thinking helps with real items, but  perceiving words three dimensionally causes problems! So if the dyslexic kicks into picture thinking while reading words, the perceptions can become distorted and the brain no longer receives accurate messages. So the  print may blur or even move or words may be omitted or changed around. The Davis dyslexia programs have excellent tools that the person can use to overcome these tendencies. They will be left with their dyslexic abilities, but not the issues it causes.

Famous Dyslexics

Many reports about dyslexia feature famous people who have achieved great things despite their dyslexia. As Davis Dyslexia Facilitators, we believe that they succeeded BECAUSE of their dyslexia, not in spite of it.
Dyslexics highly visual-spatial thinking, allows for fantastic imagination, outside-the-box thinking, and intuitive problem-solving. Many, artists, actors, singers, engineers, architects, chefs, business entrepreneurs and sports people are dyslexic. Picture thinking is very fast. It usually happens subconsciously, so the dyslexic is not always aware of the pictures. Problems solving and conceptual thinking are often enhanced as a result.
