Do many adults undertake the Davis Dyslexia correction program?

Adults make up about one third of the Focus on Learning clients. Adults get a whole lot from the program as they have the motivation required to make changes. Adults gain confidence and the tools necessary to reach their goals.

What is the difference between the Davis Dyslexia correction program and what the school is doing or other programs we have tried?

Dyslexics are visual, hands-on learners. Schools do not cater to such individuals. All other programs and school support programs use auditory methods to increase the person's ability to read. This does not lead to a confident independent reader, unless the individual is a word thinker. If the person was a word thinker they would not have fallen between the cracks at school in the first place.

The Davis Dyslexia Correction program is the oldest and most widely used dyslexia program in the world. The training to become a Davis Dyslexia Correction program Facilitator is extensive and comprehensive and is specifically geared towards dyslexics.

What about children of less than 8 who are experiencing difficulties?

It depends on what is occurring for the younger child as to whether it is necessary to start a 'ready to read' program with them. There is a very effective Young Learners Program, which is a hands-on program using clay and visual methods for reading. Personally, I only do this program with children age 6 to 8, as I believe children younger than that who are experiencing reading difficulties may be too young for reading programs and should be having fun and enjoy being read to until they are older.

What if the individual has visual perception issues such as blurring or moving words?

The visual ability is a great talent when the person is doing a creative activity or one that requires use of the imagination. The visual perception issues occur when the person's brain is altering perception which involve 2D activities such as reading, writing, spelling and maths. By showing the dyslexic person the techniques to control their perception, you are dealing with the cause of dyslexia NOT just the symptoms.  The Davis Dyslexia Program addresses the root cause of the problem - not just the symptoms. The symbol mastery then continues to eliminate confusions with symbols and words.
There is no need for coloured glasses or coloured sheets to correct the issue. The Davis Dyslexia Correction program eliminates the reason the issue exists, so that the issue no longer exists.

How long does the Davis Dyselxia correction program take? There are several different Davis Dyslexia Correction programs, but the most common program is the Davis Dyslexia Correction Reading program. This program runs for approximately 30 hours, usually from Monday to Friday. The final day is spent with the parent or support person to train them in all the techniques required to continue the work at home. The client then comes back for 3 follow up reviews as required.

Is the dyslexia cured at the end of the week?

Dyslexia is not an illness and so is not cured. We consider dyslexia to be a gift, we also know that there are issues that need to be addressed to allow only the gift to remain. The client will notice changes about themselves during the week. At the end of a week the client will understand how to use the tools and techniques to correct their dyslexia and continue the positive change after the program. Continung to use the tools and completion of the follow up work is necessary to continue the improvement.

I'm concerned about my child taking time off school.
If your child has been having difficulties in the classroom and their confidence is being affected, missing a week of school is not going to make a big difference to them. The improvement in self-esteem and in their abilities will more than make up for missing school. Normally schools are supportive of children who are struggling with reading or have learning difficulties and are happy for child take week off school. The next step is to contact the facilitator to set up a consult/assessment to see if the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program is the solution.
