Dyslexia is not: laziness, brain damage or lack of intelligence

According to the UK department of education website:

Dyslexia is not related to intelligence and can occur in severe, moderate or mild forms.

Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. 'Children and adults with dyslexia' said 'that they often felt deeply humiliated when asked to read. They reported being ridiculed and bullied because of their reading difficulties.'

The study says that other areas that may be affected by dyslexia are:
  • Difficulties in organising work and other aspects of life
  • Poor sense of the passage of time, mix up dates and times
  • Difficulty when doing more than one task
  • Difficulty in carrying out instructions, copying from the board, remembering what has just been said
  • Poor motor control resulting in difficulties in controlling a pen
  • Difficulties in recognising or confusion between letters or familiar words when reading or remembering the visual image of words, signs or symbols
  • Mispronunciation caused by difficulties in discriminating between sounds
  • Difficulties in reading text causaed by visual distortions such as blurring or moving letters
  • Problems with sequencing

Ron Davis Says:
Dyslexia is a product of thought, talent and a special way of reacting to the feeling of confusion

    Perceptual ability

Dyslexic individuals have a perceptual ability that makes them talented in areas such as:
    • Architecture
    • Engineering
    • Manual skills
    • Athletics
    • Art/sculpture
    • Music
    • Drama/acting
    • Strategic Planning
    • Reading people
    • spatial awareness

This perceptual talent is also the cause of the learning difficulty

    Dyslexics are visual thinkers

Dyslexic individual needs to learn when to use the perceptual talent and when not to. The perceptual talent is the ability to perceive things as if they are real,  like a picture or a movie.

When the dyslexic individual comes across something that is not understood, the perceptual ability can become a problem, causing the person to get confused and to almost become locked in this state of confusion, causing frustration and irrititation.
